This was a fun series of articles to read through. I had not seen these movies in a while so it was cool revisiting them in these posts.
I agree that these sequels never really rise up to the level of quality of the original, yet it can still be interesting or worthwhile to explore the worlds setup in Scanners, even if it’s in a campy comic book-ish low budget kind of way.
I also think this is a series (at least the Cronenberg one) that is ripe for a modern reboot of some kind in maybe a mini series format. Even an animated version maybe. Through watching the series, if done with care,
there are many social themes that could be explored in that world (mental health, fascism, pharma, tech, misogyny, etc) Some of the movies danced around some if by accident most likely. Lol
We are on the same page. There is merit and always something fun and a kinda workman like vibe to pick up from these direct to video sequels.They just have a “who gives a shit we’ll make a killing in the straight to video market so get as weird as you want” feel that I just really appreciate. When we see sequel after sequel today beholden to a very strict and many times boring formula these movies much like Scanner Cop is a nice reprieve.
I would 100% watch a "villain of the week" Highlander style Scanner Cop tv show if one ever got made. You've made a very good case for the Scanner sequels and I look forward to The Return of the Living Dead next! I haven't actually seen any of those so I'll try and do my homework first
I know right. Make an updated series for HBO or something. Scanners could be a metaphor/subtext for plenty of current issues.
